Why Horror Games Make You Feel Like You’re Losing Control—Slowly Public

Created by Kelley241

Loss of control in games is usually obvious.

Your character gets stunned. A cutscene takes over. Something interrupts your input, and for a moment, you’re no longer in charge.

Horror games rarely do it that way.

Instead, they take a slower approach. One where control isn’t removed all at once—but gradually, almost quietly, until you start to feel it slipping.

Control Still Exists—Technically

At first, nothing is different.

You can move freely. Look around. Interact with the environment. All the usual systems are intact.

If you stopped to think about it, you’d say you’re fully in control.

But it doesn’t feel that way.

There’s a subtle tension beneath everything, a sense that your actions don’t carry the same certainty they do in other games.

You’re controlling your character—but not the situation.
